Saskatchewan RCMP have charged two people in connection with the quadruple homicide on Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation earlier this month.
Darrius Racette, 18, and a 15-year-old boy were both arrested on Feb. 18. Both are charged with four counts of first-degree murder. The teen cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police say Racette was arrested in Yorkton, Sask., while the youth was arrested on Carry the Kettle. Racette made his first court appearance Wednesday, while the youth was scheduled to appear via phone in Regina provincial court Thursday morning.
Officers responded to a report of deaths on the reserve, located about 80 kilometres east of Regina, at 11:15 a.m. CT on Feb. 4, 2025. They found four people dead in a home.
RCMP later identified the victims as Tracey Hotomani, 34, and Terry Jack, 51, from Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation; Shauna Fay, 47, from Indian Head; and Sheldon Quewezance, 44, from Zagime Anishinabek.
RCMP believe the home on Carry the Kettle where the people were killed was targeted, said Insp. Ashley St. Germaine, a senior investigative officer with Saskatchewan RCMP’s major crimes unit.
Police previously said the four victims were “injured by firearm.”
St. Germaine also provided some clarity Wednesday on a separate incident. Hours after the quadruple homicide on Feb. 4, RCMP said they received reports of a man pointing a gun at people at Carry the Kettle’s neighbouring community, Zagime Anishinabek. Later that night, 29-year-old Keagan Panipekeesick was arrested by the Regina Police Service.
St. Germaine said Wednesday that RCMP do not believe the two incidents are related.
