Seth Rogen’s “The Studio” Leads Emmy Nominations

Canadian actor Seth Rogen received three significant nominations during the unveiling of the 77th Primetime Emmy Award nominations in Los Angeles. Rogen is the creator of the Apple TV+ comedy series called “The Studio,” which was nominated for outstanding comedy series. Other contenders in this category include “Abbott Elementary” (ABC), “The Bear” (FX/Hulu), “Hacks” (HBO/HBO Max), “Nobody Wants This” (Netflix), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu), “Shrinking” (Apple TV+), and “What We Do In the Shadows” (FX/Hulu).

Rogen himself garnered a personal nomination for outstanding performance in a comedy series. His counterparts in this category include Canadian Martin Short for “Only Murders in the Building,” Adam Brody for “Nobody Wants This,” Jason Segel in “Shrinking,” and Jeremy Allen White in “The Bear.” Additionally, Rogen is also up for nominations in the directing and writing for a comedy series.

“The Studio” revolves around the story of a newly appointed head of a movie studio, portrayed by Rogen, who craves the approval of Hollywood celebrities. The series led the comedy categories with a total of 23 nominations, surpassing the previous record set by another Apple TV+ show, “Ted Lasso,” which received 20 nominations in its debut season in 2021.

Rogen’s co-stars Kathryn Hahn and Canadian actress Catherine O’Hara were nominated in the supporting actress in a comedy series category, while Ike Barinholtz secured a nomination in the supporting actor category. “The Studio” also received nominations for various guest performances, including the first acting nomination for film director Martin Scorsese, portraying himself.

In the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series category, nominees include Uzo Aduba for the recently canceled Netflix series “The Residence,” first-time nominee Kristen Bell in “Nobody Wants This,” previous winner Quinta Brunson in “Abbott Elementary,” Ayo Edebiri in “The Bear,” and last year’s winner Jean Smart for “Hacks.”

Apple TV+ dominated the drama categories with the series “Severance” receiving 27 nominations, including outstanding drama series and nominations for lead actors Adam Scott and Britt Lower. “Severance” will compete in the outstanding drama series category against other contenders such as “Andor” (Disney+), “The Diplomat” (Netflix), “The Last of Us” (HBO/HBO Max), “Paradise” (Hulu), “The Pitt” (HBO Max), “Slow Horses” (Apple TV+), and “The White Lotus” (HBO/HBO Max).

Adam Scott is contending against Sterling K. Brown for “Paradise,” Gary Oldman for “Slow Horses,” Pedro Pascal in “The Last of Us,” and Noah Wyle in “The Pitt.” Britt Lower’s competition in the supporting actress category includes Sharon Horgan for “Bad Sisters,” Bella Ramsey in “The Last of Us,” Kerri Russell in “The Diplomat,” and Kathy Bates from “Matlock,” who, at 77 years old, became the oldest nominee in the lead actress in a drama category.

Quebec’s Jessica Lee Gagné received two nominations for her work on “Severance,” one for cinematography on the episode titled “Hello, Ms. Cobel” and the other for her directorial debut in the episode “Chikhai Bardo.”

“The White Lotus” earned 23 nominations, with Carrie Coon, Natasha Rothwell, Aimee Lou Wood, and Parker Posey competing in supporting actress and actor categories. Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and Sam Rockwell also received nominations for their performances in the series.

HBO’s “The Penguin” received 24 nominations but faces stiff competition in the limited or anthology series category from popular shows like “Adolescence” and “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” Colin Farrell, who stars in “The Penguin,” received nominations for producing and best lead actor for his role as the titular character.

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” received nominations for three of its four principal actors, including Cooper Koch, Javier Bardem, and Chloë Sevigny. However, Nicholas Alexander Chavez was not nominated for his portrayal of Lyle Menendez.

“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Squid Game,” “Four Seasons,” and their stars Tina Fey and Steve Carell did not receive any nominations this year. “Four Seasons” did secure a single nomination for Coleman Domingo in the supporting actor in a comedy category. “The Handmaid’s Tale” collected a single acting nomination for Cherry Jones for best guest actress, while lead actress Elisabeth Moss was not nominated.

“Squid Game,” which won six Emmys in 2022, did
