“Manitoba’s Ukrainian Community Unites in Solidarity Against Russian Invasion”

Members of Manitoba’s Ukrainian community gathered at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The rally, attended by hundreds, showcased a display of solidarity with Ukraine, with participants draped in blue and yellow, Ukraine’s national colors, and holding signs advocating for an end to the ongoing conflict.

Vasyl Kushlyk and his wife, Olha Hladka, expressed deep concern for their loved ones still in Ukraine, facing constant threats of drone attacks and rockets. The couple shared the heartbreaking reality of losing friends in the war and the ongoing fear of not hearing back from those serving in the military.

Betro Lukin, wearing Ukraine’s military uniform, honored his son who passed away while serving in the army. His son’s death drew a parallel to historical conflicts, emphasizing the importance of international unity and support for Ukraine’s defense.

The rally, one of several held across Canada, highlighted the devastating impact of the conflict that began in 2014, resulting in significant military and civilian casualties in Ukraine. Participants outside the museum waved Ukrainian flags and voiced their support for peace and justice.

Liza Sichkar, a war refugee now residing in Canada, emphasized the urgent need for fair and lasting peace. She expressed concerns over potential future aggression from Russia and called for continued international pressure to hold Russia accountable for its actions.

Premier Wab Kinew reaffirmed Manitoba’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, echoing the sentiment of solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The province pledged to assist in rebuilding Ukraine’s energy and food supplies as part of the ongoing effort to support the country in its struggle for freedom and democracy.

Terry Duguid, MP for Winnipeg South, condemned Russia’s aggression and reiterated the need for accountability for war crimes. He rejected the idea of Russia rejoining the G7 and emphasized the importance of standing firm against tyranny and injustice.

The rally also featured statements from Conservative MP James Bezan, emphasizing ongoing support for Ukraine’s defense efforts and the necessity of providing essential resources for the country’s security.

Joanne Lewandosky, President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Manitoba Provincial Council, called for increased support from Canada as Ukraine faces escalating attacks and dwindling international aid. She stressed the importance of standing with Ukraine during this critical time and honoring the sacrifices made by those defending the country.

Bishop Andriy Rabiy urged the community to remember the lives lost in the conflict and find hope in their sacrifices. He emphasized the significance of honoring the memory of those who fought for Ukraine and called for unity and resilience in the face of adversity.
