The Northern Super League revealed the Diana B. Matheson Cup as its championship trophy during a recent event. The trophy, honoring former national team midfielder Diana Matheson, will be presented after the league’s inaugural Final on November 15 at Toronto’s BMO Field. Matheson played a key role in establishing the Canadian women’s soccer league.
In a statement, Matheson expressed her gratitude for having her name associated with the championship trophy, emphasizing its significance to all players past and present. The NSL’s board of directors unanimously decided to dedicate the trophy to Matheson, recognizing her leadership and contributions to the league.
NSL President Christina Litz highlighted the symbolic importance of the Diana B. Matheson Cup, describing it as a representation of a new era in Canadian sports. The trophy, standing at nearly 56 centimeters tall, features a bronze base layer and a gold body to celebrate Canada’s success in women’s soccer at the Tokyo Olympics. It is adorned with the North Star emblem from the league’s logo.
The NSL Final will be nationally broadcast on CBC and live-streamed on CBC Sports and CBC Gem on November 15 at 1 p.m. ET. Additionally, the Final will be aired on TSN, RDS, and CBC domestically, with international coverage on ESPN+ and the NSL’s official YouTube channel.
Matheson, currently serving as the NSL’s chief growth officer, had a remarkable career with the Canadian senior women’s team, scoring 19 goals in 206 appearances over 17 years. She was also recently honored with the World Football Summit Award for her contributions to women’s football.
Fans will have the opportunity to view the Diana B. Matheson Cup in person as part of “The Pitch” national screening tour, a documentary following Matheson’s efforts to launch the Canadian women’s professional soccer league. The tour will commence in Vancouver, Montreal, and Ottawa in October before concluding in Halifax and Toronto in November.
