CBC Saskatchewan’s Creator Network provides a platform for young digital storytellers from diverse backgrounds to create original video content for CBC and share stories from their unique perspectives. Dingwall Guitars, a renowned name in electric guitars and basses globally, has its roots in Saskatoon. Founded by Sheldon Dingwall in the 1980s, the company has been crafting electric bass guitars in Saskatoon for over 40 years.

Inspired by his inability to afford a quality guitar as a young musician, Dingwall, with the help of mentors and a DIY spirit, handcrafted his first electric guitars. These early creations were refined during his band’s tours, leading to the birth of Dingwall Guitars. The company initially struggled but found support from engineers who valued performance over trends.

Despite facing a major setback in 1996 when a fire destroyed their manufacturing facility at Uncle Ed’s building in Saskatoon, Dingwall remained resilient. With the community’s support, including a benefit concert, he rebuilt the company. Today, Dingwall Guitars is one of Canada’s top guitar makers, producing high-end bass guitar models, with most still manufactured in Saskatoon.

Notable musicians such as Leland Sklar, John Taylor, and Amos Heller use Dingwall instruments, highlighting the company’s impact on the music industry. Dingwall’s passion for music and craftsmanship has allowed him to travel the world and bring joy to audiences through his instruments, creating a positive chain of effects.
