The Canadian men’s alpine ski team has been making significant strides in recent seasons, achieving world championship victories, securing medals, and claiming victories at prestigious events like the Kitzbuhel downhill race. Head coach John Kucera is optimistic about the potential of the talented new generation of Canadian ski racers, emphasizing the team’s momentum and high expectations heading into the World Cup season and the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy.

Kucera highlighted the team’s focus on podium performances, with several athletes having already achieved success at the World Cup level. He emphasized the goal of setting high standards, especially with three athletes who have previously stood on the podium at World Cup events. The trio leading the resurgence of the Canadian men’s alpine ski program includes Jack Crawford, Cam Alexander, and Jeff Read.

Crawford’s recent achievements include winning Olympic bronze in the alpine combined event in 2022, followed by a silver medal in a super-G World Cup race. Alexander, who hails from North Vancouver, B.C., has also had notable successes, including a world championship bronze and multiple World Cup podium finishes. However, Alexander faced a setback with a knee injury during training, but he is optimistic about his recovery and aims to return for the upcoming season.

Jeff Read, a second-generation member of the national team, made his mark by winning a silver medal in the super-G in Kvitfjell. The team’s camaraderie and competitive spirit have set a positive tone, with Read acknowledging the motivation and drive within the group.

Looking ahead to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Bormio, Italy, the Canadians are preparing for the challenging alpine events. Despite past success on the Bormio slopes, Coach Kucera emphasized the need for adaptability, as the conditions during the Olympics may differ from the regular World Cup circuit.

While Olympic success is never guaranteed in the unpredictable sport of alpine skiing, Kucera remains confident in his team’s ability to compete for podium finishes. The team’s dedication and focus on continuous improvement mirror the strong legacy of previous Canadian ski teams, setting the stage for a promising future in men’s alpine skiing.

The men’s alpine downhill event at the Olympics is scheduled for February 7, with the World Cup season kicking off in Soelden, Austria, on October 26. Fans can catch live coverage of these events on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.
