Off-year elections in the United States do not usually draw as much attention as those held during midterm and presidential years. However, the stakes in 2025 are notably higher compared to previous off-year elections.

In the 2021 elections, Glenn Youngkin’s victory in Virginia garnered significant interest. Youngkin, a moderate Republican, managed to attract independents and casual conservatives by distancing himself from Donald Trump’s controversial statements and refusal to accept the 2020 election outcome. Fast forward to the present, Youngkin is now leaving office due to Virginia’s prohibition on consecutive governor terms. Meanwhile, Trump has made a remarkable political comeback and is serving as President until January 2029.

Trump’s influence is evident in this year’s elections, particularly in California, where efforts are underway to counter a plan aimed at keeping Republicans competitive in the upcoming midterms.

One of the key races to watch is California’s Proposition 50, which will impact the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 2026 midterms. Following a move in Texas led by Trump to reshape congressional districts, California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has implemented a redistricting plan that could potentially benefit Democrats by securing additional seats.

The California proposition has attracted significant attention and funding, with prominent figures like Barack Obama and Arnold Schwarzenegger taking opposing stances on the issue. Despite Democrats outnumbering Republicans in California, polls suggest a close outcome on the proposition vote.

In Pennsylvania, where Trump fueled conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, voters are deciding on the retention of three Democratic-backed justices in the state’s Supreme Court. A vote to remove all three justices could lead to a deadlock in the confirmation process, potentially resulting in a divided court.

In gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey, Democrats are aiming to maintain control of the offices. In New Jersey, U.S. Congress member Mikie Sherrill is facing off against Trump-backed candidate Jack Ciattarelli. In Virginia, Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger is favored to win, despite facing criticism for not calling for the resignation of a lieutenant governor candidate involved in a past controversy.

Mayoral races in various cities, including New York City, are also drawing attention. In New York City, state legislator Zohran Mamdani, known for his progressive platform, is competing against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

These elections highlight the diverse political landscape in the U.S. and the ongoing influence of key figures like Donald Trump in shaping electoral outcomes.
