The Christie Residential School, a former Vancouver Island institution with a history dating back to 1900, saw its remaining structures demolished in Tofino, British Columbia. Survivors and their families witnessed the demolition, marking the end of a painful chapter in Canadian history.

Originally located on Meares Island before being moved to Tofino in 1971, the school operated until 1983, making it one of the last residential schools in British Columbia. Survivor Bruce Lucas, reflecting on his past experiences, described the return to the school site as both frightening and healing for him.

During the demolition ceremony, survivors took part in dismantling the buildings, with Lucas invited to initiate the process using heavy machinery. Although Lucas recalled positive memories of playing sports at the school, he also acknowledged the trauma and terror inflicted upon him and his peers.

The Ahousaht Residential School Research team facilitated the visit for former students to witness the demolition, providing transportation, healing ceremonies, and emotional support. Thomas Rush, a former student, shared his emotional journey, expressing closure and hope for healing as he witnessed the buildings being torn down.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation documented the school’s history, revealing its funding by the Canadian government and operation by various Roman Catholic orders under different names over the years. Tragically, records show the deaths of 46 children at the facility, highlighting the devastating impact of the residential school system on Indigenous communities.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada reported over 4,100 documented deaths of children in residential schools, shedding light on the systemic abuses and cultural genocide inflicted upon Indigenous children. The ongoing demolition of the Christie Residential School signifies a crucial step towards acknowledging and addressing the traumatic legacy of Canada’s residential school system.
