The Las Vegas Aces dominated the WNBA Finals, securing their third championship in four seasons with a decisive 97-86 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. A’ja Wilson showcased her prowess in the paint, supported by strong performances from Chelsea Gray, Jewell Loyd, and Dana Evans, who were instrumental in the team’s offensive success. Aces’ coach Becky Hammon praised her team’s elite performance.
Wilson led the scoring with 31 points and nine rebounds, while Gray and Jackie Young contributed 18 points each. The Aces’ offensive efficiency was evident as they scored 54 points in the first half and maintained an average of over 90 points per game throughout the series. Wilson, named the Finals MVP, maintained her impact despite a challenging shooting night, converting 17 of 19 free throws.
The Aces’ victory was sealed with a championship trophy presentation by WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, amidst some boos from Phoenix fans. Although the Mercury made a late push in the fourth quarter, the Aces maintained control to secure the win. Kahleah Copper led the Mercury with 30 points, while Alyssa Thomas recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.
The Aces’ relentless offense kept the Mercury on the back foot throughout the series, with strong performances from Loyd, Gray, and Evans. Phoenix faced challenges with injuries, including the absence of Satou Sabally and Thomas struggling with a shoulder injury. Despite their valiant effort, the Mercury couldn’t contain the Aces’ offensive firepower.
Phoenix’s playoff journey under coach Nate Tibbetts was commendable, defeating strong opponents to reach the finals. However, they fell short against the dominant Aces, who showcased their championship pedigree. The Mercury’s loss marked their second defeat in the WNBA Finals in five years, after their victory in 2014.
