Two hikers were hospitalized following an encounter with a grizzly bear on a hiking trail northeast of Prince George, B.C. Emergency responders airlifted the hikers to Prince George Airport and then transferred them to the hospital by ambulance. One hiker was in critical condition, while the other was stable. The incident occurred in the McGregor Mountain range, a popular hiking area with remote paths accessible via a forest service road about 100 kilometers northeast of Prince George.
Eamon McArthur from the B.C. Conservation Officer Service mentioned that the affected trails have been closed and marked as specialists investigate the incident. He advised hikers to avoid the Pass Lake area. While the exact circumstances are still under investigation, McArthur highlighted the importance of hikers being equipped with safety gear. It is recommended that hikers always trek in groups, make noise, and carry safety essentials like noisemakers, bear spray, and communication devices for emergencies.
Grizzly bear attacks are uncommon in B.C., with fewer than one fatal attack reported every five years. It is crucial for hikers to be prepared and take necessary precautions when exploring bear-inhabited areas.
