Months following the debut of Nintendo’s Switch 2, Microsoft is introducing two new handheld gaming devices: the Xbox ROG Ally and the more advanced Xbox ROG Ally X. These portables, a collaboration between Microsoft and Asus, are akin to PC handhelds like the Steam Deck, offering extensive game options and customization but also added complexity.

Despite their computing prowess, the timing of these releases is noteworthy for Xbox fans due to rising subscription costs and game cancellations amid company-wide layoffs at Microsoft. The Xbox ROG Ally, priced at $799, is $100 more expensive than the Switch 2, while the higher-end Xbox ROG Ally X costs $1,299, featuring a superior processor, memory, and one terabyte storage compared to the Ally’s 512 gigabytes.

Unlike a shrunken Xbox Series console, the Xbox ROG Ally functions as a miniature PC running Windows 11, optimized for Xbox’s PC store. While it can run most new Xbox games and PC titles from other platforms like Epic Games or Steam, exclusive Xbox console games require Microsoft’s cloud streaming service for access.

The Xbox ROG Ally boasts impressive hardware with a vibrant screen, powerful speakers, and controls similar to a standard Xbox controller, providing enhanced gaming experiences compared to the Switch 2. However, its bulkier design sacrifices some portability despite being lighter than expected.

Microsoft aims to deliver seamless PC gaming experiences on-the-go with the Xbox ROG Ally, offering good performance on recommended games like Forza Horizon 5 and Fortnite. While indie games run smoothly, more demanding 3D titles may face challenges on these devices. The Xbox ROG Ally X model, tested by Pocket Lint, delivers stable performance on newer games like Avowed.

Targeting enthusiastic and affluent gamers, the Xbox ROG Ally caters to a niche market seeking high-end gaming experiences. With its premium design and performance, this device may stand out among enthusiast gamers this holiday season, complementing rather than competing directly with the Nintendo Switch 2.
