Residents of a First Nation community in northern Manitoba are facing an extended power outage that is expected to last until late on New Year’s Eve. Pimicikamak Cree Nation declared a state of emergency after a widespread power failure in the Cross Lake area late on Sunday night.

Initially, residents were informed that power might be restored by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. However, the timeline has been pushed back to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a communication from Manitoba Hydro spokesperson Peter Chura on Monday. Approximately 1,300 meters are impacted by the outage, affecting a larger number of individuals.

Hydro crews identified a snapped power line spanning the Nelson River about 10 kilometers north of Pimicikamak using a helicopter. Specialized equipment, including track vehicles, is being utilized to clear access to the site.

Due to safety considerations for the workers, the repair work must be carried out during daylight hours. Chura emphasized the challenging terrain and the added complexity of crossing a river, making the project time-consuming.

Chief David Monias, who was away on holiday when the outage occurred, is returning to the community to address the situation. With temperatures dipping below -20 degrees Celsius and feeling even colder with the wind chill, efforts are underway to provide warmth and shelter to the most vulnerable community members. Emergency measures including safety checks, transportation, and accommodation are being coordinated by local officials.

The Canadian Red Cross, in collaboration with Indigenous Services Canada and at the request of Pimicikamak, is offering support to affected residents. Emergency accommodations, meals, heaters, and generators are being provided, with ongoing coordination to address evolving needs.

Local businesses are also pitching in, with grocers supplying food and water, and monetary assistance being distributed at the gas station. Amidst the challenges faced by residents like Lori Osborne, who is struggling to access basic necessities for her one-year-old daughter, the community is rallying together to provide support during this difficult time.
