A former candidate for leadership in the Manitoba Progressive Conservative Party is taking legal action against the province, as well as wildlife officials and NDP cabinet members. The lawsuit, filed by Lazy Bear Expeditions and its owner Wally Daudrich, aims to secure permits for offroad polar bear viewing vehicles in the Churchill area. Daudrich alleges that the province’s decision not to renew permits in 2025 was unjust and harmed his business and relationships with international partners.

The lawsuit names unnamed NDP ministers responsible for natural resources, business, and environment, along with the wildlife branch director and conservation officer as defendants. Daudrich claims that the province’s actions were unlawful and targeted his company due to political bias. He further alleges that the decision was made to benefit Lazy Bear’s competitors, Frontiers North Adventures and Great White Bear Tours.

Daudrich asserts that the province conspired with his competitors to undermine Lazy Bear’s position in the polar bear viewing market. Additionally, he claims that he was discriminated against based on his political beliefs and candidacy for the PC leadership. Seeking the restoration of permits and damages for financial losses, Daudrich emphasizes that the allegations have not yet been proven in court.

The provincial public service and government declined to comment on the ongoing legal matter. Daudrich, who plans to run for office as a PC candidate in Turtle Mountain, remains determined to pursue his case through the legal system.
