Barger added a two-run homer in the third inning, scoring Ernie Clement, who had hit a nearly home run-worthy triple. Guerrero’s solo shot in the fifth inning further increased Toronto’s lead to 5-0.
Rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage’s strong performance kept the Mariners scoreless through five innings, recording seven strikeouts. The Blue Jays’ defense turned three crucial double plays to support Yesavage.
Seattle managed to score two runs in the sixth inning with a solo homer by Josh Naylor and an RBI single from Eugenio Suárez. Toronto responded in the seventh inning, capitalizing on Mariners’ mistakes to widen the gap to 6-2.
Closer Jeff Hoffman sealed the victory for the Blue Jays, striking out four Seattle hitters in the later innings.
