The Quebec Superior Court has given the green light for a class-action lawsuit against Ticketmaster, alleging the company imposed unfair service fees on ticket purchases. Justice Eleni Yiannakis stated in a recent decision that the plaintiffs have satisfied the prerequisites for a trial, with potential compensatory refunds in the event of a successful outcome.
The legal action, initiated by Montreal-based law firm Paquette Gadler, contends that Ticketmaster’s service charges contravene Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act and Civil Code. According to the lawsuit, Ticketmaster’s fee structure is disproportionate to the service’s actual cost, linking fees to ticket prices in what the law firm deems an exploitative manner.
Initiated in August 2024 on behalf of plaintiff Felipe Morales, the class action includes individuals in Quebec who have purchased North American event tickets through Ticketmaster since July 2021. Despite the court’s ruling, Ticketmaster, a global ticket vendor for various entertainment events, has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
