Canada Faces Uphill Battle to Reach Climate Goals

Canada’s official climate target appears to be unattainable based on the latest data released by Environment and Climate Change Canada. The department’s projections of greenhouse gas emissions play a crucial role in determining if the nation is making progress towards its climate objectives.

According to the projections outlined in the report, Canada is set to significantly miss its 2030 climate goal by achieving only half of the targeted 40 to 45 percent reduction from 2005 levels. The current climate initiatives by the government are expected to lead to a 21 percent reduction in emissions by the end of the decade. However, if additional climate policies are put in place, the country could potentially achieve a 28 percent reduction.

This update comes shortly after a stark warning from a prominent Canadian climate think-tank, which highlighted that Canada is unlikely to meet its 2030 target. A forecast by the Canadian Climate Institute in September suggested that the country was on track to reduce emissions by 20 to 25 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.

In response to the recent report, the Canadian Climate Institute emphasized that urgent policy actions are needed as the country is significantly off course in meeting its climate goals. Prime Minister Mark Carney, during year-end interviews, hinted at the concerning news. The latest update from Environment Canada marks the first since Carney assumed office.

Under Carney’s leadership, certain key elements of Canada’s climate strategy have been altered, such as the removal of the consumer carbon tax, a pause on the electric vehicle mandate, support for additional LNG exports, and potential backing for a new bitumen pipeline to the Pacific coast. Consequently, the current report signifies a regression compared to previous years when Canada, under Justin Trudeau’s administration, was progressing towards a 34 percent reduction in emissions below 2005 levels.

This report coincides with the ten-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement, a significant global climate accord aimed at limiting the increase in average global temperatures to less than 2 degrees Celsius and striving for a 1.5-degree target. Despite seemingly small increments, even slight temperature rises, according to climate experts, can exacerbate severe heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, and flooding events like those witnessed in Abbotsford, B.C., in recent times.
