Team Canada secured their place in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers by triumphing over Mexico in the Group A playoffs at Club Sonoma. Victoria Mboko of Toronto swiftly defeated Renata Zarazua 6-1, 6-1 in just 53 minutes, while Carson Branstine of Montreal overcame Julia Garcia 6-3, 7-6 in the best-of-three final.
If Canada had lost a singles match, they would have faced a decisive doubles match with Gabriela Dabrowski and Mboko against Giuliana Olmos and Zarazua. Canada’s victory over Denmark set the stage for the winner-takes-all showdown against Mexico, who had previously defeated Denmark.
Branstine kickstarted the showdown with a singles victory over Garcia, showcasing her skills after switching allegiance from the United States to Canada in 2017. The match lasted one hour and 39 minutes, with Branstine displaying a solid performance with one ace and effective break points.
Reflecting on her win, Branstine admitted to initial nerves but emphasized the importance of executing her game plan. Mboko, on the other hand, highlighted the challenge of facing talented opponents on their home turf and expressed satisfaction with her performance for the team.
The Canadian team’s success in the playoffs sets the stage for their participation in the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers.
