Ukraine is set to present an updated peace proposal to the United States on Tuesday with the goal of resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. Following discussions in London involving President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leaders of France, Germany, and Britain, Kyiv aims to counterbalance a U.S.-supported draft perceived as favoring Moscow.

In a hastily arranged meeting on Monday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Zelenskyy met to bolster Ukraine’s position. Zelenskyy disclosed that the revised plan consists of 20 points, but there is still disagreement regarding the issue of Ukraine relinquishing territory, a demand pushed by Moscow.

Emphasizing the need for compromise, Zelenskyy highlighted the complexity surrounding territorial matters. He reiterated Ukraine’s stance of retaining all its land. The discussion also touched on leveraging Russian assets frozen in the West, as suggested by a British government source.

Additionally, leaders from several European countries urged the European Union to swiftly act on a stalled proposal to utilize these assets for supporting Ukraine. The focus remains on securing U.S. security guarantees to deter any potential future Russian aggression, which commenced with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The release of a U.S. ceasefire blueprint has prompted European leaders to assess their positions amid concerns that Kyiv might be pressured into accepting unfavorable terms, potentially destabilizing the region. While U.S. officials claim they are nearing an agreement, both Ukraine and Russia have shown reluctance to endorse the proposed framework.

Zelenskyy further stressed the vital role of the European powers in negotiating improved conditions within the U.S. plan. He acknowledged that critical decisions necessitate collaboration with both the U.S. and Europe. Zelenskyy acknowledged in a social media post that the path to peace ultimately hinges on Russia’s actions.

Following talks with U.S. negotiators, Zelenskyy traveled to Brussels for discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. They emphasized that any peace deal must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensure its long-term security.

As the conflict in Ukraine persists, with Russian forces advancing in the east and infrastructure sustaining damage, the diplomatic efforts seek to address the evolving security landscape. The ongoing negotiations emphasize the need for a just and enduring ceasefire while navigating the intricate dynamics between the involved parties.
