Peel Regional Police have acknowledged that a significant amount of gold stolen from Toronto Pearson Airport in April 2023 was likely swiftly taken out of Canada to locations in the Middle East or South Asia. Lead investigator Detective Sergeant Mike Mavity disclosed during a recent Peel Police Service Board meeting that a considerable portion of the stolen gold had probably been transported to regions such as Dubai or India, where gold with identifiable markings can be accepted and melted down. The police have been diligently investigating the theft, which involved a man gaining unauthorized access to an Air Canada Cargo terminal using a duplicate waybill for a seafood shipment, and fleeing with a palette loaded with gold bars.

Despite the ongoing investigation lasting nearly 15 months, limited information has been shared with the media and the public regarding the progress. On the anniversary of the heist, authorities announced the arrest of nine individuals connected to the case and the search for three others, yet details about the relationship between the suspects and the whereabouts of the missing 400 kilograms of gold remain scarce.

In a recent briefing to the Police Service Board, it was revealed that the stolen gold is believed to have been worth more at the time of the robbery than initially stated, and that only a small amount of it was melted down at a jewelry store in Mississauga. The police also clarified previous statements made during a press conference and provided insights into the connections among the charged individuals related to the heist.

The investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on locating the missing gold and tracing any proceeds from its sale. Authorities plan to examine electronic devices seized from suspects and obtain financial records through production orders from banks. The cost of the investigation, known as ‘Project 24 Karat,’ has reached $5.3 million, with an anticipated total expenditure of $10 million. Detective Sergeant Mike Mavity emphasized that despite the evolving narrative, the primary charge remains theft over $5000.

Toronto criminal defense lawyer Jeff Hershberg expressed skepticism about the police narrative surrounding the suspects and highlighted the importance of waiting for the legal process to unfold. He questioned the purported connection between stolen gold and gun-related offenses, emphasizing the need for transparency and disclosure in the investigation.

Overall, the investigation into the Toronto airport gold heist continues, with authorities working diligently to unravel the complex web of events surrounding the theft and the subsequent activities of those involved.
