The upcoming Quebec Liberal Party leadership race is scheduled to commence on January 12, 2026, following the conclusion of Pablo Rodriguez’s six-month term. The selection of his successor is slated for March 14, 2026. Currently, Marc Tanguay, the Member of the National Assembly for LaFontaine, is fulfilling the role of interim leader of the Official Opposition at the National Assembly. Tanguay assumed this responsibility after Rodriguez’s resignation last week, which occurred amidst an internal crisis within the party.

The party has been embroiled in controversy due to allegations of illicit campaign contributions aimed at securing Rodriguez’s victory in the leadership election. These allegations prompted Quebec’s anti-corruption police, UPAC, to initiate an investigation into the purported pay-for-vote scheme. Despite the unfolding events, Rodriguez has maintained his innocence, asserting he had no knowledge of the alleged arrangement.

Prospective candidates interested in entering the leadership race have until February 13 to submit their applications and gather 750 endorsements from members in good standing. Additionally, a $30,000 deposit is required to participate in the race. Furthermore, candidates must adhere to an election spending cap set at $120,000, excluding the initial deposit.
