NASA provided an update on the Artemis II mission during a press conference today, confirming that the mission is scheduled to launch around the moon as early as April 1. Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, stated that following the Flight Readiness Review (FRR), the teams are ready to launch Artemis II pending the completion of some final tasks. Emphasizing that it is a test flight with inherent risks, Glaze assured that the team and equipment are prepared for the mission, aiming to roll out to the launch pad next week.

The press conference focused on NASA’s Flight Readiness Review, a crucial step before the upcoming launch. Glaze mentioned that a new launch date, April 2, has been added to the window, allowing for a launch between April 1 and April 6. The mission will involve Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, along with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, on a trajectory around the moon.

The crew is set to enter quarantine on March 18 before heading to the Kennedy Space Center on March 27. NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) underwent a wet dress rehearsal in January to prepare for the initial February launch date. However, issues such as hydrogen leaks and problems with helium flow to the upper-stage engines caused delays, leading to the current launch timeline.

NASA has addressed the technical challenges, including resolving the helium flow issue, installing new batteries, and planning a retest of the flight termination system. Administrator Jared Isaacman recently announced a modification to the Artemis program, shifting the focus of Artemis III to a test mission involving docking maneuvers with lunar landers developed through partnerships with SpaceX and Blue Origin.
