Lace up your skates and return to the ice, as more thrilling content from the “Heated Rivalry” series is on the horizon for next year! The excitement that originated with author Rachel Reid, hailing from Nova Scotia, continues with a fresh novel released by Harlequin.
Initially anticipated for a September release this year, the announcement of a new addition to the Game Changer series by Reid was made on January 12. However, in a recent Instagram video, both Reid and Harlequin disclosed that the publication date for “Unrivaled” has been rescheduled to June 1, 2027.
In the video, Reid shared her exhilaration at the heightened media interest in her work but acknowledged the time constraints it has imposed on her writing. She also mentioned the physical challenges she faces due to her Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2023.
“Unrivaled,” the seventh installment in Reid’s hockey romance series, delves into the evolving relationship between hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. No longer rivals, their love is now out in the open. This narrative progression follows the events of the sixth book, “The Long Game,” immediately.
The successful adaptation of “Heated Rivalry” directed by filmmaker Jacob Tierney premiered last November as the most prosperous Crave Original Series to date, resonating with both new and seasoned fans of queer hockey love stories.
The show’s popularity has propelled its lead actors, Hudson Williams from British Columbia and Connor Storrie from the United States, into overnight stardom, culminating in their appearance at the 2026 Golden Globes.
Receiving global acclaim for her portrayal of distinctly queer Canadian characters, Reid expressed her elation at contributing to the growing collection of queer narratives with positive outcomes. She emphasized the current significance of such stories and the uplifting response she has received.
Recognized in Canada, “Heated Rivalry” secured a spot on the Canada Reads 2026 longlist and dominated the bestseller list after six years of its 2019 release, according to Bookmanager.
In the latest book, “Unrivaled,” the celebration of queer love endures as Shane and Ilya navigate new life stages, including marriage and playing together on the same team for the first time. Amidst the #TakeBackHockey movement, the couple remains steadfast in their love for each other and the sport.
With over 1.3 million copies of the Game Changers series sold in North America and a confirmed second season of the show, fans eagerly anticipate more content. Reid’s array of novels explores various romantic pairings within the intense hockey universe, including “Role Model,” “Tough Guy,” and “Common Goal.” Existing pre-orders will continue to be honored, as per Reid’s assurance.
