Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado made her first public appearance in 11 months in Norway’s capital, Oslo, following a daring escape from Venezuela. She emerged on a hotel balcony to greet a passionate crowd of supporters celebrating her recent Nobel Peace Prize win.

Machado, known for leading a significant peaceful resistance against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s authoritarian regime, was visibly moved by the crowd’s chants of “Freedom! Freedom!” as they sang the national anthem together. Dressed casually in jeans and a puffer jacket, she spent time outside the hotel, embracing family members, aides, and supporters who hailed her as “President! President!”

In a heartwarming moment, Machado expressed her desire for everyone to return to Venezuela, while supporters worldwide had previously held demonstrations in anticipation of her Nobel Peace Prize recognition. Her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, graciously accepted the award on her behalf during the ceremony.

After spending a year in hiding due to political tensions in Venezuela, Machado met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who affirmed Norway’s commitment to supporting a democratic Venezuela. Flight-tracking data revealed Machado’s journey from the U.S. to Oslo, where she acknowledged the risks taken by many to ensure her presence at the ceremony.

The 58-year-old activist’s Nobel Peace Prize win highlighted her unwavering dedication to fostering democracy in Venezuela, despite facing obstacles that prevented her from contesting the presidential election against Maduro. The lead-up to the election in 2024 was marred by widespread repression and human rights violations, drawing international concern and calls for accountability.

Acknowledging the support from various activists and politicians, Machado praised efforts to address human rights abuses and political turmoil in Venezuela. She also commented on the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration in addressing the Venezuelan crisis, emphasizing the need for international attention and action to curb authoritarian behavior.

Machado’s resilience and commitment to democratic values have resonated globally, with her Nobel Peace Prize win symbolizing hope for a free and prosperous future for Venezuela.
