Hardline conservative Sanae Takaichi made history by becoming Japan’s first female prime minister on Tuesday, breaking the nation’s glass ceiling and signaling a shift towards a more conservative stance. Takaichi, a protege of former prime minister Shinzo Abe and an admirer of Britain’s Margaret Thatcher, secured 237 votes in the lower house election out of 465 seats.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged Takaichi’s achievement on social media, expressing anticipation for enhanced collaboration between the EU and Japan. Prime Minister Mark Carney also extended congratulations to Takaichi while appreciating outgoing prime minister Shigeru Ishiba for his service.

Takaichi’s victory as the 104th Japanese prime minister is significant in a country where male dominance prevails. Her election is expected to lead to a more right-leaning approach on issues such as immigration and social matters. The victory was sealed after Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) formed a coalition with the right-wing Japan Innovation Party. Although the coalition is two seats shy of a majority in the lower house of the National Diet, Japan’s parliament.

Japan is currently facing inflation after years of deflation, prompting public discontent and bolstering support for opposition groups. Takaichi, like Abe, is likely to prioritize government spending to stimulate the economy, resulting in a surge in the stock market but also raising concerns about the country’s debt burden.

With defense and national security as focal points of her administration, Takaichi has pledged to boost Japan’s defense spending and strengthen partnerships with the United States and other security allies. She is known for her conservative views on issues like same-sex marriage and surnames for married couples. Takaichi’s cabinet includes two women, with Satsuki Katayama appointed as the first female finance minister and Kimi Onoda as economic security minister.

Katayama, a former Finance Ministry official with expertise in fiscal matters, is recognized for her currency diplomacy skills and decisive decision-making. Shinjiro Koizumi will serve as Japan’s defense minister, while veteran lawmaker Toshimitsu Motegi will take on the role of foreign minister.
