The Canadian curling trials, a significant event leading up to the Winter Olympics, kick off this weekend in Halifax. Eight top men’s and women’s teams will compete for the chance to represent Canada in the four-player curling events in northern Italy in February. Canada’s entry for mixed doubles was secured by Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant last season, earning a spot for Canada at the Olympics with a sixth-place finish at the world championships.

The men’s and women’s trials commence this Saturday in Halifax under a round-robin format. The team with the best record advances directly to the final, with the second- and third-place teams facing off in a semifinal to determine the finalist opponent.

In a departure from past trials, the final will be a best-of-three series instead of a single game. The finals are scheduled for next Friday and Saturday, with a potential deciding third match on Sunday.

The successful team will aim to restore Canada’s Olympic curling reputation, which has dwindled since the 2014 Games where Brad Jacobs and Jennifer Jones claimed gold. Canada has only secured one medal in the four-person events since, a bronze by Brad Gushue in 2022.

Canada’s record in mixed doubles has been varied, with a gold win in 2018 by Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris but missing the playoffs in 2022.

To predict the likely winners at the trials, Shoreview Sports Analytics used the Bradley-Terry model to estimate each team’s strength based on pairwise comparisons and recent performances. The simulations indicated the top contenders in both the men’s and women’s events.

Women’s Trials

Rachel Homan’s team, dominant in global women’s curling, is a strong favorite to win the event. Homan’s rink has been undefeated at recent championships and has an impressive winning streak against Canadian opponents.

Statistical analysis by Shoreview suggests Homan has a 91% chance of winning the trials, with other contenders having minimal probabilities.

For the men’s trials, Brad Jacobs is considered a slight favorite among several competitive skips aiming for an Olympic spot. Matt Dunstone is also a strong contender alongside Jacobs, with a tight race predicted for the trials.

With varied outcomes expected, the men’s event promises an exciting competition with potential for dramatic conclusions.
