A woman who was tragically killed on January 5 in Saanich, B.C., has been identified by a close friend as Laura Gover, a business professor at Vancouver Island University and Camosun College. Kelsea McLaughlin, who had a 25-year friendship with Gover, emphasized her role as a dedicated mother to her two young daughters. McLaughlin has initiated a fundraising campaign to support the 41-year-old’s children, aged seven and 11.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Gover, McLaughlin also highlighted the unnecessary nature of the tragedy, sparking feelings of anger. The fundraiser organized by McLaughlin has garnered nearly $110,000, with the proceeds intended to be safeguarded in a trust for Gover’s daughters’ future needs.
Following the incident, Saanich police disclosed that Muhammed Basar, identified by McLaughlin as Gover’s former spouse, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the case. Basar was apprehended on the same day at a residence on Blair Avenue and is scheduled for a court appearance on January 21. The case has been classified as a “K file,” indicating a case of alleged intimate partner violence by the B.C. Prosecution Service.
Camosun College expressed profound shock over Gover’s untimely death, emphasizing her recent appointment to the business school in 2021 and her extensive experience in post-secondary education and management training. The college community, including students, faculty, and staff, mourned Gover’s passing, with college president Lane Trotter acknowledging the significant impact on those who knew her. Grief-counseling support services will be offered to assist staff and students during this difficult time.
