Brent Bowden was shocked to discover a banana peel on his truck in June 2024. A member of the Truro Police and of African Nova Scotian descent, Bowden understood the negative historical connotations associated with bananas being used as a racist symbol against Black individuals, including athletes.
Expressing concerns about the incident, Bowden highlighted the racial implications tied to Black people and monkeys, emphasizing the need to understand the significance of such actions. Security camera footage from the Truro Police Service captured two officers leaving the detachment, with one of them carrying a banana that was later thrown from the vehicle onto Bowden’s truck.
Since the incident, Bowden has not returned to work, leading to complaints under the Police Act and a dispute over his representation with the union. The Truro Police Service and the Town of Truro took the matter seriously, with internal investigations conducted to address the situation. Despite these efforts, Bowden felt that the officers involved were not adequately held accountable.
An African Nova Scotian community leader was brought in to offer support during the internal meetings, with the police service stressing that there was no evidence of intentional wrongdoing. However, Bowden expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome, feeling that the investigation was merely a formality to contain the controversy.
Bowden filed complaints against the officers, which were investigated but did not result in findings of misconduct under the Police Act. Despite this, Bowden’s concerns were acknowledged by the final report, which recommended additional training on cultural competency and unconscious bias within the police service. The town has since implemented new processes to address complaints and has established a whistleblower policy based on the report’s recommendations.
The situation has taken a toll on Bowden, who remains off duty with no set return date. He has faced challenges with his union representation and has been navigating various legal processes surrounding the incident. Despite the obstacles, Bowden remains determined to share his story and advocates for accountability and support within the workplace.
