Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed willingness on Sunday to forego Ukraine’s NATO membership bid in return for Western security assurances but rejected the idea of ceding territory to Russia during discussions with U.S. envoys to seek an end to the conflict.

Zelenskyy, together with U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, engaged in talks where Zelenskyy highlighted the need for security guarantees akin to those provided to NATO members since Ukraine’s NATO aspirations were not supported by the U.S. and certain European nations.

Addressing the media before the negotiations, Zelenskyy stressed that these security guarantees were crucial to thwart potential Russian aggression, signaling a compromise from Ukraine’s side. Russian President Vladimir Putin has viewed Ukraine’s NATO pursuit as a threat to Moscow’s security, prompting the invasion in February 2022, and has insisted on Ukraine renouncing its bid for any peace agreement.

Zelenskyy emphasized the need for legally binding security assurances endorsed by the U.S. Congress and awaited updates from a meeting between Ukrainian and U.S. military officials in Germany. The negotiations between the U.S. and Ukraine have faced challenges, particularly regarding the control of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, currently under Russian occupation.

One of the key points of contention is Putin’s demand for Ukraine to pull back its forces from the Donetsk region as a prerequisite for peace, a condition rejected by Kyiv. Zelenskyy dismissed a proposal for Ukraine to withdraw from Donetsk and establish a demilitarized economic zone, citing concerns over its feasibility and fairness.

The issue of territorial control remains delicate, with Ushakov, Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, indicating that Russian forces would remain in parts of Donetsk even if designated as a demilitarized zone. Ushakov warned that finding a compromise might be protracted, noting that U.S. proposals accommodating Russian demands had faced resistance from Ukraine and its European allies.

Zelenskyy’s consultations with French President Macron before the talks underscored the coordinated efforts to ensure shared security interests. Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine for a robust and enduring peace that safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty and European security in the long run.

Merz, a key figure in European support for Ukraine, cautioned against Putin’s ambitions to reshape European borders and revive the old Soviet Union, emphasizing the need for unity and vigilance against potential aggressions.

As the negotiations unfolded, both Ukraine and Russia engaged in aerial confrontations, with Ukraine reporting missile and drone strikes from Russia resulting in disruptions to essential services. The ongoing conflict underscores the pressing need for a peaceful resolution to mitigate further humanitarian crises and regional instability.
