Brett Davidson had recently completed a walk with his dog in Calgary and was engaged in a text conversation with his new partner when he encountered Cory Miklic, a violent offender who carried out a savage attack, stabbing him more than a dozen times.

44-year-old Miklic pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Tuesday in front of Davidson’s family, who were present in the gallery at the Court of King’s Bench. The family listened as prosecutor Darren Maloney recounted the details of the crime from an agreed statement of facts.

Davidson, a 39-year-old retired navy veteran who had recently relocated to Calgary, was residing in an Inglewood condo on Ninth Avenue. On the day of the incident, August 27, 2022, Davidson was confronted by Miklic in the hallway of his building, where Miklic’s mother also resided. The two individuals were previously unknown to each other.

Miklic, with a history of 33 assault-related convictions, was out on bail for assault when he used a kitchen knife to brutally stab Davidson at least 13 times. Prosecutor Katrina Sole Kahler expressed that there was no discernible reason for Miklic’s actions.

During the attack, two neighbors from the fourth floor heard a disturbance, cries for help, and witnessed Miklic assaulting Davidson. Subsequently, they called 911 while Miklic fled to his mother’s residence, leaving the knife in a kitchen drawer.

Despite sustaining severe injuries, Davidson managed to descend the building’s stairs and collapsed on the sidewalk in front of the gym on the ground floor, where he pleaded for assistance. Gym manager Stephen Leonard, along with others, tried to aid Davidson by applying pressure to his wounds and keeping him conscious until help arrived.

Davidson, in a poignant moment, shared that the attack was a random act before succumbing to his injuries. Medical responders and staff at Foothills Medical Centre worked tirelessly to prolong Davidson’s life for two hours, but he passed away around 3:45 that day.

Meanwhile, Miklic departed the scene, watched a movie at a nearby theater, and later returned to the condo building, where he was apprehended by authorities. Thirteen members of Davidson’s family submitted victim impact statements, which were reviewed privately by Judge Labrenz.

The prosecution also shared a statement from Marnie, Davidson’s new partner, emphasizing his loving and compassionate nature. Labrenz, in delivering Miklic’s sentence, highlighted the senselessness and gravity of the crime, sentencing Miklic to life in prison with a minimum parole ineligibility period of 13 years, a sentence jointly recommended by the prosecution and defense counsel, Balfour Der.
