NASA has decided to halt the development of a space station in lunar orbit in favor of utilizing its components to build a $20 billion U.S. base on the moon’s surface within the next seven years, as stated by the agency’s new leader, Jared Isaacman. Isaacman, who took office in December, revealed this shift in strategy during a NASA event in Washington, where he detailed various modifications to the Artemis moon program.

“It should come as no surprise that we are pausing the Gateway project and shifting our focus to establishing infrastructure that can sustain operations on the lunar surface,” Isaacman informed attendees at the event. The Lunar Gateway, which was intended to be a space station orbiting the moon and was largely constructed with the help of contractors like Northrop Grumman and Intuitive Machines subsidiary Lanteris Space Systems, will now be repurposed into a base on the moon’s surface, a complex undertaking.

“Despite facing significant hardware and scheduling challenges, we believe we can repurpose existing equipment and leverage international partnerships to meet our objectives for the lunar surface and other program goals,” Isaacman emphasized. The Lunar Gateway was originally designed to function as a research platform and a transfer station for astronauts to access moon landers before descending to the lunar surface.

Isaacman’s recent changes to the flagship U.S. moon program have led to substantial alterations in contracts under the Artemis initiative, prompting companies to adjust swiftly as China advances towards its own planned moon landing by 2030.
