After criticizing the leadership of the RCMP on a podcast, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is facing scrutiny from some party members about their continued support for him. Five members of the Conservative caucus, speaking anonymously to Radio-Canada, expressed concerns that Poilievre has not adjusted his message sufficiently since the last election and is not projecting the image expected of a potential prime minister.

Radio-Canada interviewed a total of 10 Conservative sources nationwide, including seven caucus members. Four of these sources are now uncertain about backing Poilievre in an upcoming confidence vote in January, even though they have supported him in the past. One source remarked in French to Radio-Canada that it is irresponsible to suggest that a former prime minister should be imprisoned.

During a recent appearance on the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre accused former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of breaking the law by accepting a free vacation, referencing the 2019 Aga Khan scandal, and possibly committing another offense during the SNC-Lavalin affair. Poilievre alleged that the RCMP had covered up these incidents and criticized the RCMP leadership for failing to hold the Liberal government accountable.

Despite some party members expressing doubts about his leadership, Poilievre still maintains significant support within the Conservative Party. His Quebec lieutenant, Pierre Paul-Hus, voiced confidence in Poilievre, emphasizing his value to the country and Quebec. Paul-Hus clarified that Poilievre’s comments were primarily directed at former RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, whom he accused of making numerous errors and following political directives.

In a statement issued by Poilievre on Monday, he reiterated that his remarks were aimed at Lucki, highlighting her history of scandals and political interference. While some criticize Poilievre for his comments, others view them as a minor misstep, acknowledging his unique political style and authenticity as factors that contributed to the party’s strong performance in the popular vote in the recent federal election.
