The Vancouver Goldeneyes found themselves trailing for most of their inaugural franchise game. Despite the pressure of a boisterous crowd of nearly 15,000 at the Pacific Coliseum, the team remained composed. Each time the Seattle Torrent scored, Vancouver quickly responded.

In the final minutes of the game, Vancouver’s alternate captain, Claire Thompson, netted a crucial goal to force overtime. Ultimately, the Goldeneyes emerged victorious with a 4-3 win over Seattle in overtime, marking a thrilling start for both expansion teams and setting the stage for a fierce west coast rivalry.

Abby Boreen, a forward for Vancouver, sealed the triumph with an overtime goal, courtesy of an excellent pass from Tereza Vanišová. Boreen commended the team’s resilience in coming back from a deficit throughout the game.

Seattle’s Julia Gosling notched two goals in the match, including Seattle’s first-ever franchise goal. Vancouver made history as well when Sarah Nurse capitalized on a turnover to score the Goldeneyes’ inaugural goal. Goalkeeper Emerance Maschmeyer excelled with 18 saves in her return to regular-season action after recovering from an injury.

Vancouver’s head coach, Brian Idalski, praised the team’s performance and expressed confidence in their offensive capabilities. He emphasized the need for minor adjustments to enhance their gameplay in future matches.

The game marked a significant moment for women’s hockey in Vancouver, with a record attendance at the Pacific Coliseum and the team’s historic achievements. The event also paid homage to past hockey greats and showcased the dedication and progress of women’s hockey over the years. The sold-out arena buzzed with excitement, symbolizing a bright future for the PWHL’s newest teams.

The PWHL’s decision to establish teams in Seattle and Vancouver earlier this year was met with enthusiasm, particularly in Vancouver, where the team’s home arena added to the excitement. The meticulous preparations at the Coliseum culminated in a vibrant game day experience, with fans eagerly purchasing merchandise and showing strong support for the Goldeneyes.

The successful debut of both expansion teams highlighted the growth and potential of women’s hockey, setting a promising tone for the upcoming season. The enthusiasm and energy in the arena reflected the community’s embrace of the new teams and the sport’s bright future in the region.
