On Wednesday, the NDP leadership race progresses with the party’s inaugural leadership candidate forum featuring five candidates. The event is not a typical debate but rather a “worker-first forum” organized by the Canadian Labour Congress and moderated by its president, Bea Bruske. This forum may offer insights into the frontrunners in the NDP leadership contest.

The five candidates endorsed by the party and set to participate include:

**Rob Ashton:**
Rob Ashton, a B.C. dockworker and national president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada, is considered a dark horse in the race. Ashton positions himself as a “working-class labour candidate” rather than a conventional politician. His candid and unfiltered demeanor, including occasional swearing in interviews, sets him apart. Pollster David Coletto views Ashton’s authentic approach as a potential challenge to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

**Tanille Johnston:**
At 38, Tanille Johnston is the youngest contestant, currently serving as the director of community programs at the First Nations Health Authority and as a city councilor in Campbell River, B.C. She aims to revamp the NDP into a bold and progressive force that cannot be overlooked. Johnston advocates for environmental sustainability and opposes the construction of oil pipelines.

**Avi Lewis:**
Avi Lewis, known for his journalism career, proposes progressive policies such as a wealth tax and public options for cell phones and grocery stores. He aspires to implement a “green industrial strategy” that prioritizes environmental concerns. Lewis, married to author Naomi Klein, emphasizes straightforward communication and aims to align the NDP with the Green Party of Canada.

**Heather McPherson:**
Heather McPherson, an Edmonton NDP MP, is viewed as the establishment favorite, supported by key party activists. McPherson emphasizes inclusivity and aims to broaden the party’s appeal rather than resorting to exclusivity. Her campaign focuses on engaging a wider audience and rejuvenating the party’s communication strategy.

**Tony McQuail:**
Tony McQuail, a farmer from Ontario, advocates for environmental preservation and collaboration between the NDP and the Green Party. Running a modest and environmentally conscious campaign, McQuail underscores the importance of sustainable practices and unity among progressive parties.

Although activist and author Yves Engler has not officially entered the race, he seeks inclusion in the upcoming forum. Engler, hopeful to participate, highlights his pro-worker platform and draws parallels to Jagmeet Singh’s late entry into the 2017 campaign. Despite fundraising success, he faces warnings about accepting contributions prematurely to comply with leadership rules.

The NDP leadership candidate forum presents an opportunity for contenders to showcase their platforms and connect with voters.
