A man accused of shooting at a Jewish Hanukkah event at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach is facing 59 charges, including murder and terrorism, as per police reports on Wednesday. The alleged assailants, a father and son, carried out the attack, resulting in the death of 15 individuals, causing widespread shock and raising concerns about anti-Semitism and extremism.
Sajid Akram, aged 50, was fatally shot by police during the incident, while his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, who also sustained police gunfire, emerged from a coma on Tuesday. New South Wales Police disclosed that the younger Akram has been charged with multiple offenses, including 15 murder counts, 40 counts of attempted murder, a terrorism charge, and other related accusations.
During a court appearance via video from his hospital bed, Akram’s lawyer refrained from entering pleas or seeking bail for his client. The police statement mentioned that the alleged actions of the man were aimed at promoting a religious agenda, causing harm, and instilling fear in the populace. Initial investigations suggest a potential terrorist motive linked to ISIS, a designated terrorist group in Australia.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged to collaborate with the Jewish community following criticism of his government’s response to anti-Semitism during the Israel-Gaza conflict. The government faces scrutiny over the legal acquisition of high-powered firearms used in the attack by Sajid Akram. Albanese clarified that Naveed Akram was previously probed for ties to ISIS in 2019, but no imminent threat was identified at that time.
Funerals were held for two rabbis who were victims of the shooting incident, with Rabbi Eli Schlanger and Rabbi Yaakov Levitan being remembered for their partnership and contributions to the community. The funeral for the youngest victim, 10-year-old Matilda, is scheduled for Thursday. The community continues to mourn the tragic loss and stand united against violence and hatred.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of the Bondi Beach tragedy, a somber atmosphere enveloped the community, with gatherings and memorials honoring the victims and showing resilience in the face of adversity. The incident has sparked a collective response of mourning, reflection, and solidarity among Australians during this challenging time.
