American skiing sensation Mikaela Shiffrin is set to race in her home turf of Colorado next weekend as the top contender in the World Cup, having secured back-to-back victories in slalom events. Shiffrin showcased her dominance in another slalom race, clinching her second consecutive win in the discipline at the start of the Olympic season. Competing in the Austrian Alps under sunny but chilly conditions, Shiffrin clocked the fastest time in both runs, finishing with a remarkable time of 1 minute 48.11 seconds, a significant 1.23 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Lara Colturi from Italy representing Albania.
This victory marked Shiffrin’s 66th World Cup slalom win and her 103rd overall, setting new records in both categories. The reigning slalom world champion, Camille Rast of Switzerland, trailed in third place with a time of 1:49.52. Shiffrin is now gearing up for her upcoming races – a giant slalom on Saturday followed by a slalom event the next day at Copper Mountain, which serves as the primary training base for the U.S. ski team.
Shiffrin expressed her excitement for the upcoming races at Copper Mountain, highlighting the comfort of staying in her own bed for the first time during the season. In the recent slalom race, Shiffrin held a slight lead of 31-100ths of a second over Colturi after the initial run, but she escalated her performance in the final leg to secure a convincing victory. Reflecting on her performance, Shiffrin noted the challenging conditions but emphasized the need to push hard to maintain the lead against tough competition.
With Shiffrin and Colturi now occupying the top spots in both the slalom and overall standings after three events, Shiffrin’s teammate Paula Moltzan secured the third position following a fifth-place finish in the latest race. Looking back at the season opener, where Shiffrin placed fourth and Moltzan finished second in the giant slalom won by Julia Scheib of Austria, Shiffrin’s focus remains on excelling in slalom and giant slalom events leading up to the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina.
Meanwhile, Laurence St-Germain of Canada delivered a solid performance, finishing 11th in the race, showcasing a remarkable climb in the standings during the second run. In a competitive field where reigning Olympic champion Petra Vlhova is recovering from a knee injury, Colturi has emerged as a formidable rival for Shiffrin in the slalom events. Colturi’s journey from a junior world title to her recent podium finishes highlights her resilience and determination in the sport.
As the competition heats up, the upcoming races promise thrilling encounters as top athletes like Shiffrin and Colturi continue to push boundaries and strive for excellence on the slopes.
