Amid a large-scale attack by Russia on Ukraine, more than 650 drones and three dozen missiles were launched, resulting in casualties, including the death of a four-year-old child. The assault, which commenced during the night and extended into the daylight hours of Tuesday, targeted energy facilities in western regions, according to Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. This offensive occurred shortly after a round of peace talks led by the U.S. to resolve the ongoing conflict.

The strike on Tuesday claimed the lives of two individuals, including the child, in the Zhytomyr region, while another person was killed outside Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as a clear indication of Russia’s intentions, involving over 30 missiles and 650 drones deployed across multiple regions.

The Defence Ministry of Russia reported targeting Ukrainian energy and military installations, along with capturing two villages near the front line in Ukraine. The impact of the assault led to emergency power outages in most regions, as confirmed by Ukraine’s grid operator. In the Odesa region, Russia’s strikes damaged various infrastructure, including energy facilities, ports, transport systems, and residential areas, causing harm to a merchant ship and over 120 homes.

In response to the escalating situation, Poland, a NATO member neighboring western Ukraine, deployed Polish and allied aircraft to safeguard its airspace following the Russian attacks near the border. Moscow’s intensified offensive on Ukrainian energy and logistics is seen as a tactic to exert pressure on Kyiv and potentially influence negotiations on a U.S.-backed agreement.

Recent peace discussions in Miami involving U.S. officials, Ukrainian and European delegations, and separate engagements with Russian counterparts aimed to explore possibilities for a resolution. However, Russia’s demands for territorial concessions and military restrictions from Ukraine continue to impede progress towards a peaceful settlement.

President Zelenskyy criticized Russian President Putin for persisting in military actions and urged the international community to apply more significant pressure on Russia to cease hostilities. The ongoing conflict underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent further loss of life.
