Canada’s Olympic cross-country ski trials scheduled for the upcoming Winter Games have been relocated from Prince George, B.C., to Vernon, B.C., due to unfavorable snow conditions. The trials, crucial for selecting Canada’s team for the Milan-Cortina Olympics in February, will maintain the original dates of December 13-17 but will now take place at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre instead of Caledonia Nordic Ski Centre.
Nordiq Canada announced the venue change, citing the inadequate snow conditions in Prince George that could not ensure the necessary course quality for an Olympic qualification event. With the competition schedule being inflexible and Sovereign Lake experiencing adequate natural snow accumulation, the decision was made to shift the trials to a more suitable location.
Expressing gratitude to the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club and the Prince George community for their efforts in preparing for the event, Nordiq Canada’s CEO Beckie Scott acknowledged the challenges posed by uncontrollable weather conditions. Scott praised the professionalism and dedication of the local community, emphasizing Prince George’s reputation as a top-tier Nordic venue.
Sovereign Lake, known for hosting top-notch competitions, is expected to provide the ideal conditions for athletes vying for a spot on the 2026 Olympic Team. The Olympic Games’ opening ceremonies are set for February 6, with cross-country events starting the next day and continuing until the closing ceremonies on February 22.
Canada boasts a strong history in Olympic cross-country skiing, having secured two gold medals and one silver in past Games. Beckie Scott, a gold medalist in 2002 and a silver medalist in team sprint in 2006, highlighted Canada’s success in the sport along with Chandra Crawford’s women’s sprint gold in 2006.
The decision to relocate the trials was necessary due to the limited natural snowfall at Caledonia Nordic Ski Centre, as depicted by a snowmaking machine on site. This adjustment aims to ensure fair and competitive trials for Canadian athletes as they strive for Olympic glory in Milan-Cortina.
