Parents and healthcare professionals are voicing opposition to the Alberta government’s contentious COVID-19 vaccination program. The initiative has encountered strong resistance ever since the province announced its intention earlier this year to charge the majority of Albertans $100 for a COVID shot.

Determining eligibility for free vaccines has proven to be complex, and the appointment booking process has been criticized for its intricacy and lack of clarity. The influx of inquiries since the opening of COVID and flu shot bookings to the general public on Monday has overwhelmed Health Link, Alberta’s health information phone service, causing some Albertans to struggle to secure appointments.

Expressing her concerns, Calgary resident Madeline Anderson highlighted the numerous barriers hindering access to vaccinations. While her entire family will receive the free flu shot, she has opted for only her 11-month-old child to receive the COVID vaccine due to the associated cost. Anderson spent several hours on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday trying to connect with Health Link, expressing frustration and questioning the fairness of the situation.

Some individuals are abandoning the booking process, according to Dr. Elsa Fiedrich, a Calgary pediatrician and neonatologist, who has observed parents facing challenges in getting their children vaccinated. She emphasized the confusion and frustration experienced by families, with many spending significant time trying to reach Health Link without success.

Health Link received a substantial number of calls from Albertans seeking vaccine appointments, with Primary Care Alberta reporting nearly 25,000 calls for COVID-19 vaccines and over 3,600 calls for flu shots between Monday and Wednesday. Complications arise from the need to utilize all doses in pediatric multi-dose vials once opened, leading to longer booking times.

The Alberta Medical Association has raised concerns about access barriers to vaccinations, warning that ongoing issues with the rollout may result in lower overall vaccination rates. President Dr. Brian Wirzba emphasized the potential consequences of reduced vaccination uptake, including increased hospitalizations and strain on the healthcare system.

An analysis by the Alberta Medical Association indicated that each hospitalized COVID-19 case can cost the health system more than $34,000. Dr. Wirzba emphasized the cost-effectiveness of vaccination programs, highlighting the potential savings and benefits of widespread vaccination.

Despite these concerns, the Ministry for Primary and Preventative Health Services disputed the Alberta Medical Association’s analysis, citing existing cost-effectiveness studies. The province’s vaccination rates have seen a decline, with only two percent of Albertans having received a COVID vaccine so far this season.

The divergence from vaccination guidelines set out by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has led to differing approaches in Alberta and Quebec regarding universal vaccination. Alberta has not followed NACI’s recommendation to vaccinate high-risk groups, while Quebec has included all seniors in its coverage.

As the vaccination campaign progresses, ongoing challenges in access and uptake remain critical factors in Alberta’s fight against COVID-19.
