Grant Avenue Studio, a renowned music recording facility in Hamilton that has hosted famous artists such as Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash, is commemorating its 50th anniversary in the music industry this year. Founded in 1976 by Canadian record producer and musician Daniel Lanois, along with his brother Bob Lanois and partner Bob Doidge, the studio is situated in a converted Edwardian-style residence on Grant Ave. near Main St. E. Throughout its history, Grant Avenue Studio has attracted top musical talents from both Canada and around the globe.

In 2023, Mike Bruce and his partners, Debbie Bruce and Marco Montano, took over ownership of the studio. Describing the studio as a “living museum,” Bruce emphasized the rich history and energy that permeates the space, highlighting the studio’s evolution into a unique soundproof environment that exudes charm. Jamie Tennant, a local music enthusiast and longtime program director at CFMU, noted that Grant Avenue Studio has become a revered destination for musicians due to its historical significance and association with iconic figures like Gordon Lightfoot, Johnny Cash, and Brian Eno.

Despite minimal updates since its establishment in the 1970s and ’80s, Grant Avenue Studio retains its original character, with peculiarities such as sand-filled window wells for soundproofing. The studio’s vintage MCI JH-500C control console, akin to the one used in producing classic rock albums like “Hotel California,” adds a touch of musical history to its recording technology.

To celebrate its 50-year milestone, Grant Avenue Studio plans to continue its “Grant Avenue Studio Presents” initiative, showcasing local artists through intimate YouTube concerts. Bruce expressed his admiration for Hamilton’s diverse musical talent and highlighted upcoming events, including an anniversary party, an exhibition at Hamilton Civic Museums, and the return of the Road to Supercrawl contest for emerging bands. With a blend of history, energy, and cutting-edge technology, Grant Avenue Studio remains a sought-after destination for artists seeking a distinctive recording experience.
