More than 100 residences in Badger, N.L. have been evacuated due to rising water levels, with the town’s mayor anticipating further evacuations. Mayor Dennis Butt described the river’s unpredictable behavior, noting a gradual rise interspersed with fluctuations, causing concern for residents. The convergence of the Exploits, Badger, and Red Indian rivers is contributing to localized flooding.

The provincial government issued evacuation orders for specific areas, including Beothuk Street, Earle Street, Kinsman Drive, and others. Residents with even civic numbers on the north side of Badger Drive and specific numbers on Maple Street are also required to evacuate and register at the Badger Community Centre or through the Canadian Red Cross.

Efforts are underway to accommodate evacuees, with some placed in the full Mount Peyton Resort in Grand Falls-Windsor. Additional lodging options are being sought in the Gander area, with social media being used to facilitate arrangements. Mayor Butt emphasized the importance of preparedness for those not yet evacuated.

Residents like Perry Clance expressed concerns about potential property damage, particularly related to their sump pumps. Clance, who has experienced previous evacuations, highlighted the uncertainty faced by homeowners during such situations. The Canadian Red Cross is facing challenges in securing adequate accommodations, with limited space exacerbated by concurrent events in the region.

Despite the ongoing flood threat, emergency operations in Badger are at Level 2, with updates being shared on the community’s Facebook page. The town, familiar with past flooding incidents, remains resilient, drawing on collective experience to navigate the current crisis. Mayor Butt acknowledged the difficulty in predicting river behavior accurately and emphasized community support in coping with the situation.
