Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives are set to convene privately at a policy assembly this weekend amid internal questioning about the party’s trajectory following nearly eight years in government. The gathering in Toronto will center on key themes that aided Premier Doug Ford in securing a consecutive third majority government around a year ago. However, a faction of provincial conservatives is advocating for a reflective examination of the party’s future direction during the event.

Project Ontario, established last year, aims to spark policy dialogues that it contends the party has shied away from. Comprising 11 strategists and writers with backgrounds in federal and provincial administrations, the group includes figures such as conservative activist Ginny Roth, writer Adam Zivo, and public policy analyst Brian Dijkema. Matt Spoke, a founding member, emphasized the importance of aligning power with a clear ideological framework, raising questions about the purpose of victory without a defined vision.

Criticism has been leveled at the Premier for what some perceive as a lack of principled clarity and vision. Project Ontario has actively engaged in policy debates, particularly on critical issues like the economy, education, housing, and childcare. Discontent with the government’s response to their proposals led to public advocacy, drawing disapproval from Ford and his allies, who have labeled them as “yahoos” and “right-wing radicals.”

The group has advocated for various conservative stances, including tax reductions, decreased government expenditure, and enhanced educational choices. Despite encountering resistance, they stress that their ideas are not radical and draw inspiration from diverse Canadian regions, including non-Conservative governed provinces. Project Ontario has pushed for housing reforms to stimulate construction, advocated for educational diversity like charter schools, and underscored the need for a more inclusive policy debate.

Amidst the ongoing discourse, doubts linger about the extent of genuine policy deliberations at the convention, with concerns raised over scripted responses overshadowing substantive discussions. However, party spokesperson Peter Turkington affirmed that delegates have the opportunity to voice queries and proposals during the event, emphasizing the party’s commitment to listening to its members and delivering on its pledges.

While acknowledging that policy debates may not always translate directly into governmental actions, conservative strategist Sam Duncan underscored the significance of grassroots feedback in shaping policies. As the Premier seeks to energize supporters and guard against complacency, the convention serves as a platform to gauge sentiments and potentially influence future policy directions.

Looking ahead, the prospect of Ford seeking a fourth term remains uncertain, with considerations influenced by external factors such as the impact of the Trump administration on Canada. Despite potential challenges arising from prolonged tenure in office, the Premier’s ability to rally against perceived external threats could continue to resonate with voters. As the convention unfolds, Ford is expected to highlight his achievements and rally support for upcoming battles, while the party braces for the evolving political landscape.
