Courtney Sarault emerged victorious in the women’s overall competition, leading Canada to secure their second consecutive team Crystal Globe at the conclusion of the short track World Tour finale in Dordrecht, Netherlands. The athlete from Moncton claimed silver in the 1,500 meters event and then went on to clinch gold in the 500 meters, accumulating a total of nine medals (including five gold, three silver, and one bronze) throughout the four World Tour stops.
At 25 years old, Sarault made history as the first Canadian female skater to seize the overall World Tour title, amassing 980 points, a significant 150-point lead over the runner-up, Corrine Stoddard from the United States. In her winning 500 meters race, Sarault narrowly edged out Stoddard by 0.304 seconds, finishing with a time of 42.695. She executed a strategic outside pass on the third lap to overtake reigning world champion Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands.
Additionally, Sarault claimed the women’s 1,000 meters title with 300 points on the previous day, securing her first career Crystal Globe by a 70-point margin over Belgium’s Hanne Desmet. The Canadian Ice Maples team, who had previously won the team title, dominated once again with a total of 31 medals (15 gold, seven silver, and nine bronze) and 5,656 points, outperforming the second-place Dutch Lions by a substantial margin.
The competition in Dordrecht was emotionally charged as Sarault and Montreal’s William Dandjinou were crowned overall champions of the short track speed skating World Tour, with Dandjinou securing the men’s title for the second consecutive year. The Canadian team honored injured teammates Kim Boutin and Maxime Laoun by bringing their photos onto the ice during the team trophy presentation.
The World Tour format was adjusted this year due to the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics, with four stops instead of the usual six. The results will play a crucial role in determining quota spots for each country and will aid the Canadian high-performance program in selecting the five male and five female athletes who will represent Canada in Italy. The finalized list of competitors will be announced in the near future.
