The mayor of Badger, Newfoundland and Labrador, expressed cautious optimism as water levels in the area showed a slight decrease, although river levels remained elevated, necessitating the continuation of evacuation orders. Over 100 residences have been evacuated in Badger due to flooding, leaving the town of approximately 680 residents deserted on Saturday. Badger, situated at the confluence of the Exploits, Badger, and Red Indian rivers, experienced flooding when these waterways overflowed into residential neighborhoods on Thursday.

By Saturday, water levels had receded by a few centimeters but still lingered at a high level, equivalent to a one-in-20 year flood event, according to Mayor Dennis Butt. He acknowledged any decline in water levels, stating, “We’ll take any decline that we get.” Butt emphasized that a sustained 24-hour decline in water levels, dropping significantly below riverbank heights, is necessary before considering lifting the evacuation order, as the unpredictability of river behavior poses challenges despite expert forecasts.

Anticipating a winter storm on Sunday night, officials are closely monitoring the potential impact of additional snowfall. Evacuated residents have been dispersed across central Newfoundland, with many seeking temporary shelter in Gander, Lewisporte, and other neighboring areas due to limited accommodation availability in Grand Falls-Windsor caused by a hockey tournament. Mayor Butt described the situation as mentally and emotionally draining but highlighted the community’s solidarity and understanding among residents.

Residents requiring assistance are urged to contact the Canadian Red Cross registration line established for evacuees by the provincial government at 1-800-863-6582 and leave a detailed voicemail with their contact information. Additionally, support is available at the Badger Community Centre for those in need.
