Sebastian Halmagean, a 24-year-old Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) gunner based at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B., passed away near Riga, Latvia, while on his first deployment. His father, Alin Halmagean, described him as deeply proud to serve in the CAF and valued the camaraderie and responsibilities that came with his role as a soldier.
The Department of National Defence (DND) confirmed his death, stating that the circumstances surrounding it are currently being investigated. Alin, who runs a mixed martial arts gym in Stoney Creek, expressed his hope that Sebastian’s commitment to serving his country would inspire other Canadians to join the military and uphold democratic values worldwide.
Sebastian, who had a passion for war history and firefighting, had assisted in extinguishing fires in Newfoundland and Labrador before his deployment to Latvia. Local MP Ned Kuruc, a personal acquaintance of the Halmagean family, described Sebastian as a vibrant and intelligent individual who was dedicated to his military aspirations.
Halmagean’s tragic passing is mourned by the Stoney Creek community, with Kuruc emphasizing Sebastian’s heroism in defending freedom and representing his country. The investigation into his death is being conducted by CAF police in collaboration with Latvian State Police, with no additional details currently disclosed.
Sebastian Halmagean was a participant in Operation Reassurance, CAF’s significant overseas mission involving 3,000 members, aimed at supporting NATO’s deterrence and defense efforts in Central and Eastern Europe.
