After nearly three decades in coaching, Mike Miller has traversed from a small town in Pennsylvania to Berlin, having worked with NCAA Division II schools and NFL teams. Despite his varied experiences, he had not held a head coaching position until recently. Miller was announced as the 46th head coach of the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts on Tuesday, stepping up from his previous role as the team’s quarterbacks coach since 2022.
In his new position, Miller emphasized that his fundamental approach to coaching would remain unchanged – being authentic, transparent with players, and open to feedback. Additionally, he will take on the responsibilities of offensive coordinator and play-caller for the Argonauts in 2026, succeeding Ryan Dinwiddie who departed to lead the Ottawa Redblacks.
Notably, Miller’s track record of nurturing quarterbacks played a pivotal role in his promotion to head coach. Under his guidance, Toronto’s quarterbacks achieved notable successes, with Chad Kelly earning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player title in 2023 and Nick Arbuckle clinching the 2024 Grey Cup MOP award while achieving career-high passing statistics in 2025.
Following a challenging 2025 season where the Argonauts missed the playoffs with a 5-13 record, Miller and Argonauts GM Michael (Pinball) Clemons expressed gratitude towards Dinwiddie for his past contributions. Miller acknowledged his journey from a running backs coach at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh to various coaching roles across different leagues before landing the head coaching position with the Argonauts. He credited influential figures like Bill Cowher, former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, for their mentorship and support throughout his career.
Miller’s coaching experience extends to roles as an offensive coordinator with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, as well as stints as a receivers coach and coaching in NFL Europe with the Berlin Thunder. Notably, he was part of the Cardinals coaching staff that reached the Super Bowl in 2009.
