Environmental journalist Tatiana Schlossberg, a granddaughter of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 35. Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, publicly disclosed her terminal cancer diagnosis in a November 2025 article in The New Yorker. The announcement of her death was made by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation on social media on Tuesday.

Schlossberg was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in May 2024 at 34 years old, shortly after the birth of her second child. In her essay titled “A Battle With My Blood,” she detailed her journey through chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, and participation in clinical trials. Despite medical efforts, she was informed during a recent trial that her life expectancy was limited to about a year.

In the same essay, Schlossberg criticized healthcare policies advocated by her mother’s cousin, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., expressing concerns about their potential negative impact on cancer patients like herself. She highlighted her mother’s opposition to his policies to senators during his confirmation process.

Prior to her health struggles, Schlossberg had a successful career as a journalist covering climate change and environmental issues for the science section of The New York Times. Her book “Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have” received the Rachel Carson environment book award from the Society of Environmental Journalists in 2020.

Schlossberg expressed sorrow in her essay about her fear of her children not remembering her and the disappointment of not being able to continue her life with her husband, George Moran. Despite efforts by her family to conceal their anguish, she conveyed feeling their sorrow daily.

Caroline Kennedy, Schlossberg’s mother, had experienced profound losses in her own life, having lost her father, President John F. Kennedy, and her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, to assassinations in the 1960s. Additionally, her brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., tragically died in a plane crash in 1999 along with his wife, Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren Bessette.

Schlossberg’s legacy as a dedicated journalist and her courageous battle against leukemia will be remembered by those touched by her work and her story.
