Chxrry, a rising artist from Scarborough, is gearing up for her first headlining show in her hometown, but her aspirations extend far beyond the city limits. In a recent meeting at Universal Music Canada’s office, the alt-R&B singer, born Lydia Habtemariam, confidently outlined her global ambitions. Expressing a desire to make a mark on the international music scene, she aims to surpass the achievements of previous Canadian icons.

Backed by XO Records, the label established by the renowned artist The Weeknd, Chxrry is set to perform at the Mod Club as part of the Departure Festival. Drawing inspiration from The Weeknd’s advice to “Create your own lane,” Chxrry is preparing to release her debut album, “U, Me & My Ego,” on May 29 under the XO/Universal banner.

Diving into themes of honesty and self-expression, the eclectic album showcases Chxrry’s versatility as she navigates through various musical genres. With tracks ranging from soulful R&B to empowering anthems, her smoldering vocals convey raw emotion and authenticity.

Explaining the significance behind the album’s title, Chxrry delves into the multifaceted nature of ego and identity, shedding light on the complexities of confidence and self-assurance. Through her music, she aims to provide a platform for candid storytelling and relatable experiences.

Chxrry’s journey to musical stardom began unexpectedly after a viral video of her singing Rihanna’s “Work” catapulted her into the spotlight. Encouraged by her early success, she embraced her passion for music and ventured into the industry, eventually catching the attention of industry insiders and labels.

Collaborating with XO Records has allowed Chxrry to carve out her own artistic path while staying true to her vision. Grateful for the support and creative freedom provided by the label, she looks forward to making a lasting impact in the music industry and paving the way for emerging talents, particularly women, in Toronto and beyond.
