RCMP officers specializing in national security matters have now become part of the investigation into an alleged bomb-making plot involving four individuals associated with Western University. The RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) is providing support to the local police in London, Ont., as confirmed by a Mountie spokesperson, although details on their involvement remain limited. The four suspects, comprising three men and one woman who are either current or former students of Western University, are facing multiple charges, including the storage of chemicals capable of making explosives at a residence located just west of the campus, along with the production of a firearm.

The charges stem from a trespassing incident on campus that led authorities to the discovery of the chemicals at 212 Chesham Pl., as reported by police last week. The exact reason for the INSET’s participation in the investigation is currently unclear, leading one counterterrorism expert to caution against premature speculation on the suspects’ intentions. Phil Gurski, a former analyst with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), suggests that certain elements of the case hint at potential espionage activities.

However, Gurski emphasizes that the accused individuals, all in their twenties and lacking significant experience, do not fit the typical profile of individuals involved in terrorist or transnational activities. He stresses the importance of gathering more information before drawing any definitive conclusions. Despite the seriousness of the explosives and firearm involved, the motive behind their possession remains uncertain at this stage.

The alleged manufacturing of the firearm presents a distinctive aspect of the case, as it does not appear to be linked to organized crime, according to Francis Langlois, a University of Quebec professor specializing in legal and cultural firearm issues. Langlois notes the increasing prevalence of homemade guns due to their accessibility via online plans and printing machines.

All four suspects are currently held in police custody as the investigation unfolds.
