Canada’s Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman secured a strong 10-5 victory over Czechia at the Olympic curling venue in Italy. The duo, among Canada’s 207 Winter Games athletes, dominated the mixed doubles competition, starting with a steal in the first end and a steal of four in the second. Despite challenges like a power outage and a misplaced stone, Gallant and Peterman maintained their composure and extended their lead throughout the match.

After Czechia narrowed the gap to two points in the third end, Canada pulled ahead again in the fourth. The duo continued to build on their lead, eventually clinching the win with a decisive performance in the sixth end. The victory marked a strong start for Gallant and Peterman, who emphasized the need to stay focused and not get complacent in the competitive doubles format.

The Czech team, who secured their Olympic qualification in December, put up a good fight, but couldn’t match Canada’s performance. The match took place in the historic Cortina Olympic Curling Stadium, where a decent crowd gathered, in contrast to the spectator restrictions at the previous Games in Beijing.

Both teams faced unexpected challenges during the match, including a brief power outage and a peculiar incident involving a fly on the ice. Despite these distractions, Gallant and Peterman stayed composed and maintained their lead. Looking ahead, Canada is set to face Norway in their next round-robin match.

Gallant and Peterman’s victory sets the stage for a potentially strong showing in the mixed doubles event, aiming to replicate Canada’s success from previous Games. Gallant, in particular, is set to make history by competing in two disciplines during the Winter Games. The Canadian curling team has a strong track record in the Olympics, with 12 medals, including six gold, since the sport’s reintroduction in 1998.

Curling action will continue throughout the Games, with Homan’s rink representing Canada on the women’s side. In other matches, teams from Great Britain, Sweden, and Switzerland secured wins, showcasing the competitive spirit of the Olympic curling competition.
