An RCMP investigator testified at a coroner’s inquest that authorities believe the mother of two boys found deceased with her husband in Prince Rupert, B.C., was complicit in what is suspected to be a murder-suicide. RCMP Corp. Matthew Blumberg stated that the tragic scene uncovered on June 13, 2023, deeply affected him and his team. The bodies of Christopher Duong, Janet Nguyen, and their children were under investigation.
Blumberg revealed that evidence suggested Nguyen was a victim of Duong but without signs of resistance. The fate of the children remained unclear. The couple had left a video will detailing guardianship arrangements and their final wishes. Duong’s cellphone searches included inquiries on painless suicide methods, abandoning children at fire stations, and flight options.
The video will was recorded the same day Duong was briefly held under the Mental Health Act before being released from a local hospital. The family tragedy occurred three days later. Authorities had prior encounters with Duong and Nguyen. Duong had a history of alleged drug ties and weapon offenses, alongside a recent severe head injury from a car accident.
Leading up to the incident, Duong feared for his safety and believed he was targeted. His apprehension by police, while with his family, linked to concerns of being tracked. Despite a psychiatric evaluation prior to his release, no immediate concerns were noted by his doctor. Duong’s father reported escalating paranoia in his son and Nguyen, culminating in a distressing incident with the children in a car before the tragic events unfolded. The investigative team concluded the case was isolated to the family.
A coroner’s inquest serves to establish facts, offer prevention recommendations, and ensure transparency. If you or someone you know is in distress, there are helplines available for support.
